Vestry Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, is the Head of the Church. In the Good Shepherd branch of God’s Church, the leaders are the priest and the vestry. The vestry is comprised of nine members of the parish. They are lay people (non-clergy). The vestry representatives are elected for three-year terms at the Annual Meeting by unanimous acclamation of the church membership. The vestry meets once a month to lay out a vision for the parish, pray for the church, approve finances, and make other decisions. This is an important ministry; it’s a significant offering of time, but is also a very rewarding opportunity. It’s a joy to be able to make even a small difference in advancing the Kingdom of God here on earth. In addition to the nine members of the vestry, meetings are regularly attended by the Interim Rector, the Rev. Stephen Sedgwick; the Parish Manager; and the Treasurer. Other committee heads may be invited to meetings as necessary to report news to vestry. Meetings are normally open to church members, but the vestry has the option to hold closed session meetings if sensitive issues need discussion. The members of the vestry* are as follows: 2009-2012 Tim Leitzel Robert Lisy, Junior Warden John West, Clerk 2010-2013 Mary Davis Dan Horswell, Senior Warden Harry Pollack 2011-2014 Shannon Kootsouradis Mary Snodgrass Bill Stewart

*The vestry offices take their names from our roots in the Church of England. “Warden” comes from a Middle English word for “to guard” or “to take care of.” The Senior Warden leads vestry meetings, confers with the priest as colleague and counsel, and handles normal vestry duties as well. The Junior Warden is often thought of as “the people’s warden.” In addition to regular vestry duties, the Junior Warden is responsible for arranging the maintenance of the building. The Clerk handles official correspondence, and at Good Shepherd, coordinates the telephone calling chain in the event of emergencies. Each vestry person is accessible to parishioners and can represent their interests and concerns. The representative system of the Episcopal Church was designed at the same time and by the same leaders, who designed our national government. |
